Want to read a message on WhatsApp Web without the sender seeing the blue double-checks? Maybe you need a moment to think before replying, or you just don't want people knowing the exact second you opened their message. Here's how to turn off read receipts on WhatsApp Web — including a way that's far more flexible than WhatsApp's built-in setting.
WhatsApp's built-in option (and why it's limited)
WhatsApp does let you disable read receipts, but it comes with big trade-offs. It's an all-or-nothing switch buried in your phone's privacy settings, it also turns off your ability to see other people's read receipts, and it doesn't work in group chats at all. You can't toggle it quickly for a single conversation either — it's global and lives on your phone.
The easier way: Hide Read Receipts with WA Web Plus
WA Web Plus adds a one-click "Hide Read Receipts" toggle right on WhatsApp Web. Turn it on and you can open and read any chat without sending the blue checks — and unlike WhatsApp's own setting, you keep seeing everyone else's read receipts, and nothing changes on your phone.
- 1
Install WA Web Plus from the Chrome Web Store and open web.whatsapp.com.
- 2
Click the WA Web Plus icon (or open the full settings).
- 3
Turn on "Hide Read Receipts" in the Privacy section.
- 4
Read your messages freely — no blue double-checks are sent.
Tip: Pair it with "Hide Typing" so the other person doesn't see a "typing…" indicator while you draft a reply, and "Invisible Mode" to stay offline entirely.
Everything runs locally in your browser — nothing is uploaded, and you can switch it on or off any time.
Install WA Web Plus free and read on your terms — no blue ticks, no phone settings to change.
